Born and raised in Budapest, Bálint is a 20th century history buff and Jewish Heritage expert. He emerged as a young man in the post-communist environment of this magnificent city, and has been sharing his insider’s perspective on everyday life and the Hungarian experience through the lens of history ever since.
Growing up in a family of teachers and linguists in communist-occupied Hungary, Bálint was raised with family stories of his grandparents hiding in caves to survive the Nazis, only to then wake up in communist occupied-Hungary with a whole new nightmare situation to engage with.
Following the invasion of the Soviet Union and brutal suppression of the anti-communist uprising of 1956, three of his uncles escaped with the help of the American government, and the indirect intervention of Elvis Presley. These firsthand stories, along with the experience of travel restrictions and communist shortages in his childhood, along with many other stories and memories instilled in him a deep interest in 20th century history and a passion for sharing the story of his homeland with others.
Having lived through the turbulent but uplifting re-emergence of Hungarian independence and democracy in 1989, Bálint can offer remarkable insight into an incredibly complex time.
He feels a deep gratitude to the American people for the way they treated his relatives after they had landed in the New World, and feels that it is an honour to be able to reciprocate this hospitality in the form of a guided tour together.
With a masters degree in sociology, and fast track access to many different sites, Bálint can walk you through rich cultural experiences throughout Budapest that would be very challenging to experience without him.
